AVID- Advancement Via Individual Determination

AVID  is a college preporatory program designed to provide students with the academic and motivational supports necessary for success.  It includes an elective class where students receive training in note taking, study skills, organizational skills, test taking, and college entrance preparation as well as extensive writing experience.

The desire and motivation MUST come from within the student to commit to enrollment in a rigorous sequence of academic courses, including Honors and AP classes. Students must go through an application process to qualify.

                    NovaNET

            What is NovaNET?

v     NovaNET is an individualized computer-based program of credit recovery, created for at-risk students, allowing them to get back on track and to graduate at a faster pace.

v     NovaNET students have the opportunity to earn credit recovery for classes they have failed.

v     The teacher is present as a facilitator who gives assistance when necessary, but does not instruct the class as a whole.

Who qualifies for NovaNET?

v     A student can refer himself or be referred by a teacher, counselor, or an administrator to the program.  The NovaNET instructor and counselor will meet to determine if he/she qualifies.  They will look at three things:

1.        Transcript- Preference is given to seniors or those who have enough credits to make graduation a reality in one year.  Also, the student MUST have failed the classes considered to be eligible for credit recovery.  NovaNET is a program for both college prep and vocational students.  College Prep students should have a GPA below 2.5 and do not have plans to attend a 4 year university right out of high school.

2.        Attendance- a student must not have been referred to the counselors for 7 or more absences, per Cobb County policy.

3.        Discipline Record- A student must not have a history of infractions against school policy.  He must be mature, self-motivated, responsible, and able to work independently.

Students have been working on persuasive speeches that will be given on Wednesday.  They will be taped to help show what can be worked on to give a more effective, interesting speech.  Our next unit will concentrate on writing, as many colleges will be factoring the writing score into the total SAT grade at this point.  Up until this year, many colleges looked at the score, but it did not factor into a student's total points.  So we will be using actual prompts for practice.  Our field trip to Georgia State University will take place Wednesday, April 16th.  The donation will be $10.50, plus money for lunch.

We have just completed a unit on making speeches.  All of our Kennesaw State tutors have emphasized the importance of being able to make presentations in college.  We started with the informative speech, emphasizing the importance of an attention grabbing introduction, transitions introducing well-thought out points, and a summative conclusion.  As a means of self-critiquing, the speeches were taped and we will watch them to see what we need to work on to make our speeches more effective.  Plans have been finalized for our field trip to Georgia State University on Wednesday, April 16th.  Everyone will need to donate $10.50, as well as have lunch money.

We are quickly approaching the point where you should have completed 1/2 of ALL modules for each class you are taking.  Very few of you are taking advantage of coming in the mornings to get caught up. If you wait too long, it will be impossible to finish on time.  Please make the effort to be responsible enough to come in early for extra help.

We are fortunate in having Ms. Kathy Pauletti as our new tutor.  She is a student at KSU who has gone back to school for her secondary math education degree.  She already has a Business degree and is the owner of her own company!  We will also have some KSU  education students working with us a couple of times per week.  Be kind!!  After the results of our honesty poll, our honesty unit has brought up much discussion and dissention.  We will begin a project that involves any of the recent  cheating or lying scandals  that have been in the news.  We are planning a field trip to Georgia State in April.  More later  about that.

We are well into the semester and I can see a true effort to make good grades by the amount of studying you are doing.  We are working on an honesty unit in class.  It is truly amazing what our honesty poll said about the ethics of high school students. We will be starting a project based on your choice of a cheating scandal that has been in the news recently.  Unfortunately, there are plenty to choose from.  Keep up with the news and election coverage.  You all should have a solid foundation on the issues and candidates from last semester.

By this time, everyone should have a good understanding of how this works!  Remember, check to see how many maodules you have left to determine if you are on track.  By February 22, when grades are due, you should have completed 1/3 of the total number of modules in your class.  For example, American Lit has about 60 modules.  You should have completed 20 by the 22.  I will place 0's in for modules that are not completed.  Work hard and there should not be a problem.  You can join me any morning at 7:15 to get caught up!

Welcome back to everyone!  Your diamonte poems based on Martin Luther King Jr were fantastic and are posted in the room.  After working on a shared inquiry assignment, students wrote very revealing papers on teaching a lesson to someone who "did them wrong"!  Your creativity is amazing.  We will be starting a new unit on honesty with several different assignments.  I am so impressed with how some of you are truly determined to do the best that you can.  I can see the extra hours of study and tutorial help are really paying off.  Keep up the high expectations you have set for yourselves!  Ms. Chumley will be leaving on January 31, and we will celebrate what an asset she has been to us, with a party! Please tell her how much you appreciate her help.

Welcome back!  Hope you are well rested and ready to start this semester with great expectations of working to the utmost of your ability!  We spent the first week working on a unit on Martin Luther King Jr.  The resulting diamonte poems are on display in the room.  Great job! We are now involved in a shared inquiry assignment delving into the idea of how we know who we are.  We took a very revealing personality test and will be reading "The Social Me" by  William James to further explore the facets of this topic.  Notebooks will be checked next week- I want to see your Cornell notes!  Keep up the good work- I appreciate those of you who are coming in early or staying for the afternoon tutorial sessions.  Unfortunately, Ms. Chumley's last day will be January 31 so we will have a celebration to thank her for all her hard work.  She will be a supply Biology teacher at Kennesaw Mt, and we wish her well.

Welcome to all new and returning students.  You should be well into your NovaNET classes at this point.  If you have not filled out an application and contract, you will be getting them in class.  They must be on file with me.  Please remember that if you are taking more than one class, you must work on each class per grading period.  You can check your progress by looking at the hard copies of your modules and dividing the total number of modules by the weeks in the semester.  **New this semester is the notebook requirement, which will be collected at the end of the semester. It is worth 25% of your total grade, so take notes EVERYDAY!!

Students are working on the 2008 presidential campaign by researching the 16 official Democratic and Republican candidates.  After reading New York Times articles, students will research 1 Democratic and 1 Republican candidate to make a candidate profile. The final project can be either a PowerPoint presentation or Moviemaker project to showcase their candidates.
