Classical and Modern Languages

The purpose of the Cobb County School District's foreign language program is to encourage the appreciation of cultural values; to enable students to learn to communicate in another language; and to prepare them to successfully enter and compete in an increasingly global society.

A variety of modern and classical languages are offered at SPRAYBERRY HIGH SCHOOL , including:

French
German
Latin
Spanish

Because the Department of Foreign Language Instructors use TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through

Reading and Storytelling) classroom, you will be acquiring your language this year in some fun yet very effective ways. Our central goal is COMMUNICATION in the target language. We will explore the countries where the target language is spoken, and connections with other subjects (science, social studies, etc.) will be made through the language throughout the year

How will we learn in this class?

The TPRS method focuses on comprehension of oral/aural and written language and in many ways parallels the manner in which a first language is acquired. Research on how we learn has proven that we remember better and longer what we have actually experienced physically. One very powerful way to acquire language is through stories or narrative. Language is acquired naturally as students are exposed to repetitive, comprehensive input via personalized questions and answers and a variety of short stories all in the target language.

Reading

in the target language is an integral part of the Foreign Language methodology used at Sprayberry.

How is foreign language acquired?

Acquiring a language is like learning how to ride a bike or learning how to swim. It's a skill you build gradually, use and remember a long time. Because you will need to continually know vocabulary to communicate successfully in the target language, you may be assessed over any vocabulary acquired in class at any time during the year.

Good Luck!

ESOL at Sprayberry High School

Our ESOL Program is designed to help students attain their full social and academic potential within the American school culture. We are committed to developing our students’ communicative confidence and skills in the four main areas of language usage: listening, speaking, reading and writing. We support an optimal learning environment for all of our students as they become integral members of our community.

Presently at Sprayberry High School , we offer several English Language Arts Classes: ESOL 9th Literature, 10th Literature and 11th Literature or American Literature.  New to Sprayberry this year is the ESOL Math I class offered in conjunction with Math Support for ESOL students.  The students meet daily to have their Math and Math Language needs met.  We also are please to be able to offer an ESOL Biology class that also meets in conjunction with Science Language support and Study Skills for Science.  These new offerings have enabled us to offer greater support to the ESOL students in our school.

IEL at Sprayberry High School

Also new to Sprayberry this year is the Intensive English Language Program. The Intensive English Language (IEL) Program is a unique intervention offered by Cobb County School District (CCSD) designed to prepare eligible students for their transition to the mainstream curriculum. The primary goal of the Intensive English Language (IEL) program is to provide short- term intensive English support for students new to CCSD with little to no proficiency in English as their second language. IEL program instruction is provided in a self-contained classroom integrating survival English with academic content. The IEL students at Sprayberry spend half of their day working on English Language Acquisition and the other half  spent  with the general population in elective classes to further increase their language  acquisition by providing opportunities to spend time with native English speakers and gain first hand cultural knowledge
